When you set up a watch, we store: the email address you provide, the campground and date range you asked us to watch, and (if you set one) your site-type preference. That's it for account data — no passwords, no payment information. Separately, this site does use analytics cookies, described below.
Firepit Files uses Google Analytics to understand how people find and use the site — things like which pages get visited, how long people stay, general location (city/country level), and device or browser type. Google Analytics does this using cookies and similar technologies. This browsing data is separate from your account data above — it's aggregated and isn't tied to the email address or watches you might set up, and we don't use it to identify you personally or to send you anything.
You can read how Google handles this data in Google's privacy policy, and you can opt out of Google Analytics tracking using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on or your browser's own cookie-blocking settings.
Your email is used to (1) confirm the watch you created, (2) notify you when a matching campsite opens up, and (3) let you manage or cancel your watches. If you've opted in, we may also (4) send you marketing emails as described below. We do not sell, rent, or share your email with advertisers or unrelated third parties.
Separate from the transactional emails above, you may be given the option to opt in to marketing emails from Firepit Files — things like new features, camping and hiking tips, or other updates. Marketing emails are only sent if you've opted in, and opting in (or out) never affects whether your campsite alerts go out — those keep working either way. You can unsubscribe from marketing emails at any time using the link included in every marketing email, and we don't share your email with anyone else for their own marketing purposes.
Two service providers process data on our behalf, strictly to run the product:
Supabase hosts our database and the background job that checks availability. Resend delivers the emails we send you. Neither is authorized to use your information for their own purposes.
To check availability, our background job queries Recreation.gov's own publicly viewable per-campground availability calendar — the same information anyone can see by visiting Recreation.gov directly. We do not create a Recreation.gov account on your behalf, and we never attempt to book anything for you.
Campsite availability changes constantly, our checks run on an interval (not truly instant), and the data source is not an official, documented API — it can occasionally be slow, wrong, or briefly unavailable. Firepit Files provides best-effort notifications only and guarantees nothing. Always verify availability directly on Recreation.gov before making plans, and expect that popular sites can be booked by someone else within minutes of an alert.
Every alert email includes a one-click unsubscribe link that immediately cancels all of your watches and removes your email from future alerts — no login required. You can also manage or delete individual watches at any time from the management link included in your confirmation email. Unsubscribing from alerts is separate from marketing emails — if you've opted into those, use the unsubscribe link in the marketing email itself to stop them.
We keep your email and watch history only as long as your watches are active or you haven't unsubscribed. Want everything deleted outright? Email us and we'll remove your record entirely.
